Why measure the pH of water in reverse osmosis?
pH (hydrogen potential) is a measurement scale that goes from 0 to 14, where 7 represents neutrality. A solution with a pH below 7 is considered acidic, while a solution with a pH above 7 is considered basic (or alkaline).
- pH directly influences the taste of water.
- Water that is too acidic or too basic is not pleasant to drink and can even cause problems for certain applications (aquariums, laboratories, food industry, boilers…).
- pH reflects the acid-base balance of the water.
- Membranes are sensitive to water that is too acidic (low pH) or too basic (high pH).
- An unsuitable pH can damage the membrane, reduce its lifespan, and decrease its filtration efficiency.
