Why can osmosis water sometimes have a slight taste or smell during the first use of my reverse osmosis system or when a filter and/or membrane is replaced?

Il peut y avoir plusieurs raisons :

1. Beginning of the osmosis process:

  • Rinsing of the membrane: During the first use, the reverse osmosis membrane needs to be rinsed to remove the preservatives and contaminants that may have accumulated during transport and storage. This rinsing can last several hours and may give the water a slightly different taste or smell.

2. Bacterial contamination:

  • The biofilm: If the reverse osmosis system is not properly maintained, a biofilm can develop on the reverse osmosis membrane. This biofilm can give the water an unpleasant taste or smell.

3. Poor installation:

  • Poorly installed filters: If the filters are not installed correctly, they may not function properly and allow contaminants to pass through, which can give the water an unpleasant taste or smell.

What should I do if the osmosis water has an unpleasant taste or smell?

  • Rinse the system: Let the water run for several hours to rinse the reverse osmosis membrane and eliminate contaminants.

  • Check the pH: Measure the pH of the water and adjust it if necessary.

  • Maintain the reverse osmosis system: Replace the filters regularly and clean the system according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Check the installation: Make sure that the reverse osmosis system is properly sealed and that the filters are correctly installed.

In general, the unpleasant taste or smell of osmosis water at the beginning of use is temporary and disappears after a few hours or after a certain volume of water has been drawn. If it persists, and if it is not already the case, adding a finishing carbon cartridge can solve the problem.
